Of Retrofitting Local Trains....

The first retrofitted fully alternating current (AC) local train will run in Pune. The Central Railway has commissioned the first retrofitted fully alternating current (AC) local train made by Sanpada Car Shed from an old rake. The rake is fit for operation in 25 KV AC section and will be used in Pune-Lonavala services soon.
The cost of the retrofitting work for this 12-car train, which includes electrical equipment, mechanical modification in coaches and replacement of old passenger seats, coach partition with stainless steel with improved ventilation, and new fans and lights, is approximately Rs.3.5 crore.
A brand new train costs around Rs.24 crore. Fifteen such 12-car trains are planned to be converted from old to new AC retro rakes in near future.
The conversion from 1500 DC to 25000 V will not just increase the capacity of the suburban network, but enable suburban trains to run at a faster speed of 100 kmph as compared to the present 80 kmph. It will also give seamless connectivity to outstation trains which will not need to change locomotives when they need to enter Mumbai.
