In a big boost to Andhra Pradesh's horticulture and agri processing sector, global food and beverage giant PepsiCo's chairperson and chief executive officer (CEO) Indra Nooyi announced that the company will source mango pulp from the state for use in its products marketed in India.
“PepsiCo is committed to making Andhra Pradesh the national hub for sourcing mango pulp for India. In fact PepsiCo expects to benefit around 32,000 farmers by 2020 with this investment,“ Nooyi said during the commissioning of PepsiCo's manufacturing unit at Sri City .
Spread over 86 acres in the integrated business city , the unit will be the company's largest manufacturing unit in the country. Currently , the company has 37 beverage and three food plants in India.
“This plant will eventually entail an investment of Rs.1,200 crore when fully operational and lead to creation of thousands of jobs that represent the wide range of talent-base here. We have taken great care to ensure that the employee base of this plant is truly inclusive.We expect one quarter of the people employed in the plant to be women,“ she said. In the first phase, PepsiCo will pump in Rs.450 crore into the plant.
Nooyi pointed out that in the next few months, the company will start producing beverages covering its soft drinks portfolio such as Pepsi, 7Up, Mirinda and Mountain Dew.
