Pune seeks more funds for BRTS

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Sunday sought Rs 480 crore for the first phase of the 52-km Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) from M. Ramachandran, secretary, urban development who was on a visit to the city.MP Suresh Kalmadi along with Pravinsinh Pardeshi, commissioner, PMC, accompanied Ramachandran on a visit along the BRTS route from Swargate to Katraj in an air-conditioned BRTS bus.“Works such as cycle tracks and footpaths still need to be completed and there is a requirement for additional funds” said Kalmadi. A decision in this regard will be made at a meeting to be held next week. Ramachandran, who was quite satisfied with the progress of the project said, “We will be considering PMC’s future plans and a detailed report on how they want to use these additional funds will have to be made. We don’t think there should be much problem in approving the fund. The city deserves it.” Earlier, Rs 62 crore was given for the BRTS pilot project. A few months ago, Ramachandran had reviewed the project. “There has been tremendous progress since my last visit. There are definitely a few defects but these can easily be solved. Considering the way traffic is increasing in the city, public transport is the best alternative to commute. And BRTS is the best option.” Citizens need to get used to this new way of commuting, said Ramachandran. “There are various aspects when a new scheme is introduced. Citizens need to be educated on it and its advantages. They need to get habituated to it to accept it. However, I believe the success of the project will depend a lot on civic habits and the progressiveness of the road-using culture in the city.”When asked about the frequent accidents that took place, with private vehicles encroaching on the route, Ramachandran said, “Enforcement and management is an important aspect and stringent action must be taken. Discipline needs to be maintained and a lot depends on civic authorities on how they enforce the project.”The BRTS project covers a distance of 117 km. In the first phase, the PMC intends to formulate the 52 km stretch across the city. The remaining will be done in the second phase of the project.
