Krishnapatnam set to be India's largest Private Port

Poised to become the next gateway to the south and central regions of the country, Krishnapatnam is set to emerge as the country’s largest private port in the coming 10-12 years ready to handle a cargo capacity of 125 million tonnes per annum. The port, to be inaugurated by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on July 17, will be an important development hub of the region with four berths having a capacity to handle four vessels — each having 50,000 tonnes of cargo — at one go. Once all the 41 berths are completed, it would become a major port in Asia. The port — in its first phase — is already on a par with Visakhapatnam and Kandla ports in terms of handling the cargo capacity. With five big power plants and several industrial projects coming up near its vicinity, the port, 180 km from Chennai and 20 km from Nellore, will be on the growth curve in a couple of years. The port is being promoted by Navayuga group on a build-operate-share-transfer contract awarded by the state government. Nearly 4,500 acres of land has been handed over for the project.
