“I am disappointed that the Supreme Court has reversed a previous Delhi High Court ruling on the issue of gay rights,” Sonia said in a statement. “The High Court had wisely removed an archaic, repressive and unjust law that infringed on the basic human rights enshrined in our constitution.”
The apex court had riled not just the LGBT community, but a wide section of society with its judgment, but had pointed out that it was upto the Legislature to decide whether there is a need for the penal provision to be amended or deleted.
Sonia said that she hoped the Parliament addresses the issue and upholds the “Constitutional guarantee of life and liberty to al citizens of India, including those directly affected by this judgment.”
Amidst the incessant chatter over Section 377, the the loudest sound has been of deafening silence from the national opposition party. Other than Piyush Goyal, none of the usual BJP suspects, be it legal eagles like Arun Jaitley or quote-friendly politicians like Sushma Swaraj or Nitin Gadkari, would say a word. Unlike the Congress which was already pushed into picking sides when the case was kicked upstairs to the Supreme Court, the BJP long had the option to stay on the sidelines -- studiously ignoring the fact that one of the petitioners challenging the Section 377 verdict is BJP leader BP Singhal.
Strange but true, the normally silent Congress President Sonia Gandhi has made her stand clear while the twitter happy BJP's new PM-in-waiting has kept surprisingly quiet. Would love to know where he stands on this issue......
