UP readies Rs.3,000 crore plan for Gomti

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan for rejuvenation of Ganga in Varanasi may take some time to materialise, but the Uttar Pradesh government has already started working on Rs.3,000-crore plan for beautification of river Gomti in Lucknow, which is represented in parliament by Union home minister Rajnath Singh.
The vision document prepared after the recent visit of irrigation minister Shivpal Yadav to Japan and other countries, has been approved by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav who has given a go-ahead to creation of a Venice-like network in the state capital.
The beautification will comprise a 12-km long water body with 40-metre green belt on both sides with exotic plants and trees, swings and shades and an elevated road on each side. The river-way will be connected with Sharda canal and there will be modern and motorised boats, Gondolas for visiting tourists and facility for water sports too.
Irrigation principal secretary Deepak Singhal said that a delegation of his department led by minister Shivpal Yadav visited Japan and Malaysia to interact with professionals and government officials there for river rejuvenation. He said that the first phase is likely to be completed in the next two years. “Malaysian government and private companies have agreed to extend technical know-how for removing pollutants from the river and beautification of the river front. Priority will be increasing water level of the river by developing a new barrage at the Gomti aquaduct to divert water to the river.
