Somewhere in Karnataka....

The death of IAS officer D K Ravi, 35, who was found hanging in his Bengaluru apartment, snowballed into a major controversy as the state government locked horns with opposition parties and civil society activists who alleged foul play. The chief minister announced in the state legislature that the CID would probe the officer's death. The opposition parties were furious because their demand for a CBI inquiry had been turned down.
Demonstrators in Kolar district, where Ravi's drives against land grabbing had drawn huge support, demanded a CBI probe into his death. A 42-year-old man, who participated in a condolence meeting for Ravi at Thirumanhalli in Mulbagal taluk, returned home and hanged himself.
Reports from various quarters pointed to the officer being hale and hearty on Monday morning, raising questions over what drove him to end his life hours later. Ravi is said to have been preparing to continue his raids on builders and other businessmen evading tax. As additional commissioner of commercial tax (enforcement), he had raided 13 firms, including builders, jewellers, exporters and a bank, and recovered Rs.106 crore in tax dues.
The opposition in the assembly pointed out that a real estate company linked to home minister K J George was among those raided by Ravi. George intervened to say a preliminary probe had shown that personal matters drove the officer to suicide. He gave no details.
