SC to decide on validity of Aadhaar

The Supreme Court has said it would decide the issue of setting up a five-judge bench to hear a batch of petitions challenging constitutional validity of the ambitious Aadhaar scheme. A bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar said that it would consult Justice J Chelameswar, who was heading the bench that had initially heard the pleas, and decide on the issue of setting up of a constitution bench to hear all the petitions.

A three-judge bench, headed by Justice Chelameswar, had on August 11, 2015 referred the batch of petitions challenging the Aadhaar cards scheme to a larger bench for an authoritative view on the question as to whether the right to privacy was a fundamental right and whether the scheme violated this right.
