Mahindra's e20

M&M has launched the new generation electric car Reva e20 priced at Rs 5.96 lakh and expects it be a game changer in the electric vehicle segment. The company also plans to launch electric two-wheelers in future, but refused to share details.
“Electric mobility will be game changer in emerging countries such as India and China. Needs of emerging countries are more acute than those of developed countries, especially when it came to reduction of energy consumption,” said Anand Mahindra, chairman and managing director of M&M.
The electric car will be produced at Mahindra Reva’s recently inaugurated production facility in Bengaluru that has capacity of 30,000 cars. However, the company officials said that even if they manage to sell about 5,000 units annually, they would be happy.
The government is expected to announce subsidy on electric vehicles in next months.
Launch of Reva e20 had been postponed due to lack of clarity on subsidies on electric vehicles.
The Reva e20 will use next generation lithium ion batteries and will have a range of 100 km on full charge. The new car comes with a 25.4 bhp electric motor and takes about five hours for full charge from a normal 220V socket.
In order to run longer, it also comes with regenerative braking, which will charge the batteries as you brake, and even an optional solar panel on the roof to recharge it when parked in the sun.
The government, through the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 (NEMMP), is targeting to give a push to electric and hybrid vehicle sales. India is aiming to manufacture about six million green vehicles by 2020 that include about four to five million two-wheelers.
