Ahmedabad BRTS Phase III snippets

After being directed by the high-powered JNNURM committee in Delhi to seek approval from the political body of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for the third phase of the BRTS project, the standing committee on Thursday passed the budget for the 26.8 km BRTS corridor. The third phase of the BRTS project is worth Rs 496.34 crore. Another significant aspect of this project is that each of the BRTS bus stands would cost the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited Rs 95 lakh.
The third phase of the project includes Vadaj-Ashram Road-APMC, Shivranjini-APMC, Jashodanagar-Hathijan, Sola-Science City, Narol-Aslali and Akhbarnagar-Gota Crossroads stretches. At present, the city has 71 km of operational BRTS network. The opposition Congress has raised objections to the high cost of construction of the BRTS corridor. “AMC will spend Rs 13.17 crore on every km of the BRTS corridor. Aren’t there any cost effective ways of dealing with this project?” asks the opposition leader in the AMC, Baddruddin Sheikh.
The standing committee also passed proposals for four flyovers and railway overbridges worth Rs 457.75 crore. These include a flyover at Helmet Crossroads worth Rs 234.38 crore, at Hatkeshwar junction worth Rs 44.74 crore, and a railway overbridge at Shyamal crossing.
