Blast in Imphal

At least nine migrant labourers from Assam were killed and 11 injured when suspected militants triggered a powerful IED blast at Khoyathong in the heart of Imphal on Friday evening. Five of the injured were in a critical condition at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
The bomb exploded inside a makeshift camp housing the labourers at 7.35 pm, killing the nine on the spot.
Director general of police M K Das, who visited the injured at RIMS, said police were working to nab the culprits. Police officers, who rushed to the spot, are trying to ascertain the nature of the bomb and how it was planted. Cops said it was an IED and must have been planted some time back. They did not rule out the possibility of militants planting the bomb before the camp was constructed.
Security has been beefed up in Imphal.
Another powerful IED blast near a government school in Imphal East district’s Khurai area at 10.30 am had injured an autorickshaw driver. N Robin, who sustained splinter injuries on his left arm, was rushed to a nearby J N hospital. Doctors said he is out of danger. The impact of the blast partially damaged Robin’s autorickshaw. Assam Rifles jawans, who were on patrol at the time, could have been the target of the blast, police said.
