Pune CCTV project update

After a massive delay of over a year, the State government finally cleared the Closed Circuit Television Camera (CCTV) network project for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) areas. The contract of the project, which is set to cost Rs 225 crore, was awarded to the company Allied Digital Services.
Chief Secretary Jayant Banthia confirmed that the State had cleared the project, which involves the fitting of 1,400 CCTV cameras across the two corporations.
Principal Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal of the Information Technology department said, “Two companies, Allied Digital Services and AGC, were bidding for the contract, which was eventually given to the former, as it was the lowest bidder.”
The State government also had to choose between two companies –Tata and BSNL — for bandwidth support. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dr Amitabh Rajan was of the view that since the state-owned BSNL had copper wires, Tata would be able to provide better services.
Aggarwal added that monitoring of the Pune Commissionerate as well control rooms in both corporations will also come under this project. The deadline for the installation of the CCTVs has been decided as 42 months.
There had been a huge delay in the implementation of this CCTV project in both Pune and Mumbai, for which the government had earned plenty of criticism.
Immediately after the J M Road blasts in August 2012, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had announced this CCTV project in a bid to improve security against terror. The project subsequently been mired in a squabble over funding from various departments.
