Muzaffarnagar toll now 45

West Uttar Pradesh remained tense with official death toll in Muzaffarnagar clashes rising to 45 on Friday. The police also recovered three missing bodies — two from Muzaffarnagar and one from Meerut. Officials said some villages were still tense as inflammatory videos continued to do the rounds of west UP districts. The police have set up fixed pickets in 547 villages where security personnel have been deployed to defuse the communal tension.
In addition to the fixed pickets, the government on Friday also deployed 536 mobile units, each of which is in charge of three villages. The mobile units have been asked to seek reinforcements wherever required. Till Friday, the government had booked 187 persons and invoked the stringent National Security Act in 11 deaths. The number of preventive detentions rose to 12,000, while more than 1,200 arms licenses were cancelled and 182 illegal weapons seized.
The police have booked political leaders Kadir Rana, Sultan Nasir, Naushad Qureishi, Maulana Zamir, Pappu Nath Rana and Saidul Zamad, among others for flouting Section 144 and making inflammatory speeches in the riot-torn districts.
Meanwhile, the cops also unearthed 10 cases where objectionable content was posted on Facebook and YouTube. The government has approached the websites for help in blocking the content.
