Of Chennai’s 5th reservoir....

Chennai is all set to get its fifth reservoir to meet the rapidly increasing demand for water and to serve the extended areas. Chief minister J Jayalalithaa laid the foundation stone for the Thervoikandigai reservoir in Gummidipoondi.
The government’s plan is to have another reservoir linking Kannankottai and Thervoikandigai tanks in Tiruvallur in addition to the existing reservoirs at Chembarambakkam, Sholavaram, Poondi and Red Hills. As the new reservoir is located ahead of Poondi reservoir on the Krishna river water supply route, it will store at least one tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water released by Andhra Pradesh.
The chief minister announced the reservoir project in 2012 in a 1,495-acre area at an estimated cost of 330 crore. “A notification has been issued to acquire land from private individuals in Kannankottai, Thervoikandigai, Karadiputhur, Senji Agaram, Pallikuppam, Thamaraikuppam villages. Efforts have also been made to get 22 hectares of forest land,” a senior official said. The Tiruvallur collectorate will simultaneously continue its land acquisition to ensure that work on the reservoir is completed in two years. “The contractor will start work next week,” the official said.
The government also wants farmers in the nearby areas to get water for irrigation, by building a 1.85 km-long and 3.6 m-deep channel with a capacity of 5,000 cusecs to divert water from catchment areas in Kannankottai Hissa Rajaneri and floodwater from the upper catchment areas.
