Tvm, Kochi airports to get advanced radars

Advanced radar systems will be installed at Thiruvananthapuram and Cochin airports this month. While the radar system at Thiruvananthapuram will be inaugurated on September 17, the system at Cochin airport will be inaugurated on September 13.
This will be a check on flight delays and will ensure landing facility at these airports under all weather conditions, minister of state for aviation K C Venugopal said.
The radar system is a combination of approach surveillance radar and Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR), capable of tracking approaching aircraft within a range of 20 nautical miles. The system will augment the safety of aircraft operations and reduce the holding time of aircraft landing at the airport. The radar is also expected to reduce the landing time from the current six to nine minutes to approximately three minutes. Besides aiding the airport to optimally utilize the runway, the system would help in slashing fuel costs.
He said Rs 110 crore had been approved for construction of a new terminal at the Karipur international airport.
