The Union Cabinet green-lighted giving constitutional status to the composition of Judicial Appointments Commission. Since the composition of JAC had no constitutional status in the bill which was earlier passed by Rajya Sabha, the opposition prevented the government from tabling it in Lok Sabha.
Later, when the bill was referred to the parliamentary standing committee of law, the MPs’ panel too recommended giving constitutional status to the composition of JAC.
The amended JAC bill, when passed by both Houses of Parliament, will replace the collegium system of judges appointing judges with the proposed commission that will have representation from the executive and some independent members besides Supreme Court judges. It will be headed by the Chief Justice of India.
