Besides Andhra Pradesh, the other states going to the polls are Bihar (7), UP (15), West Bengal (6), Uttarakhand (5), Himachal Pradesh (4) and Jammu & Kashmi (2).
Having been relegated to the opposition for 10 years, after being in power for a nine-and-a-half-year period preceding that, the TDP is now battling for its political existence.
Post-bifurcation, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu is being looked upon as the only leader who could "undo the injustice" and ensure rapid development of the residual state, given his experience as chief minister.
The TDP is confident that the "Modi wave" will work to its advantage even in the Assembly election. By joining hands with the BJP, the TDP may have to forgo Muslim votes but it is not so perturbed as it feels many other factors, including the "Modi wave", will help it.
Meanwhile, former CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s Jai Samaikya Andhra Party (JSAP) candidate Sabbam Hari withdrew from Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha constituency in support of BJP candidate K Hari Babu. He said he wants Narendra Modi to become the Prime Minister.
Hari told the media that the Supreme Court had refused to stay the state bifurcation process. “Till yesterday, we were confident of relief from the Supreme Court. However, after the court’s refusal to stay the process, we realised that the division is not going to stop. I felt it is my responsibility to withdraw from the contest to ensure that the votes would not split. BJP candidate should win and Narendra Modi should become the prime minister”, he said.
