Vizhinjam Port gets Green approval

The Chennai Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has allowed Vizhinjam port authorities to go ahead with the tendering process, including calling for Requests for Qualification (RFQ), to build the port superstructure and operate the proposed deep-water container transhipment port.
The NGT passed the order while hearing a petition filed by Vizhinjam residents, Marydas and Wilfred, against the environmental clearance given to the project by the ministry of environment and forest.
The ministry of environment and forest, while clearing the project, had stipulated 29 specific and 14 general conditions that were to be abided by the port authorities.
The Vizhinjam port had submitted the environment impact assessment report to the ministry in August last.
The Rs 5,000-crore seaport would be the first green port in the country and the master plan has several environment-friendly parameters such as solar power for the port building complex and asking vessels anchored to plug into electric power provided by the port to reduce fuel and oil pollution along the coast.
Five major port operators have bid for the global tender floated by Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited for the RFQ. They are Gammon Infrastructure Projects, Hyundai-Concast, Essar Ports, Adani Ports and a consortium of SREI and OHL.
