More Domestic Flyers : Jan-March 2014

Airlines in India witnessed a surge in the number of fliers in the first three months of this year as compared with last year. Between January and March, 1.50 crore people took domestic flights as against nearly 1.49 crore during the same period last year.
The primary reason behind 1.17 lakh more people taking to the skies was an airfare correction and several short-term air ticket sales, said travel operators.
Although the growth is marginal, as per industry projections, it was the second highest in the first quarter over the past five years, except in 2012. The same period in 2012 saw 1.51 crore fliers, but the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines was operational then.Travel operators said since most discounted tickets sold over past three months were meant for travel within 30-90 days, passenger load could surge in the latter half of the year as well.
