The Supreme Court granted a status quo on India’s first warship, INS Vikrant, which the Union government had decided should be converted to scrap.
Vikrant served the nation in some international wars. The Bombay high court had given the go-ahead for its auction after it rejected a public interest litigation filed by activist Kiran Paigankar to save the ship from being scrapped and to convert it into a maritime museum in January. The Navy sold it to a Mumbai ship-breaking firm, for Rs 63 crore in March.
May 20 would have been the ship’s last day at berth off Mumbai’s coast. Paigankar challenged the HC order in the SC.
A bench of Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Vikranjit Sen issued a notice to the defence ministry and other respondents on Monday.
