Bloomberg's Global Road Safety Initiative

Maharashtra Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies and three-term mayor of New York City , signed an agreement to make Mumbai free of road injuries and fatalities by adopting global safety standards. The foundation will provide experts and Rs.100 crore aid for the endeavour. The agreement was signed at the Sahyadri guest house.
Speaking to Fadnavis and other government officials, Bloomberg described some of the measures he implemented in New York City and his foundation's $125 million Global Road Safety Initiatives for which 10 cities, including Mumbai, have been selected to be a part of a unique global network and to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities. “Road crashes kill nearly 1.25 million people each year. To put that in perspective, that's more than two people every single minute of every single day ,“ said Bloomberg.“Ever y one of those deaths is a preventable tragedy , if we invest the time, energy and resources into the work of road safety . Mumbai's efforts will save many lives--and as a large, global city , Mumbai can help show cities around the world that dangerous roads are not inevitable, and that safer roads are achievable.“ While pointing out that every three minutes, fatal accidents are registered across the world, Fadnavis emphasized the need for sustained road safety campaigns to ensure that every citizen followed the best of traffic safety practices in the world. “We are delighted to be part of Bloomberg Philanthropies' Global Road Safety initiative. The way a city conducts itself on the roads speaks volumes about the discipline of its citizens and the administration's approach towards various road and traffic initiatives,“ said Fadnavis.
Later, Bloomberg along with his team visited the BMC headquarters as well.“We showcased before him the present system in the city,“ said municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte. In order to take this ahead, a workshop will be held in March that will also include the RTO, traffic, education and the road department.
