L&T to setup Mumbai CCTVs

Inbuilt CCTV systems in malls, multiplexes and housing townships in the city will be attached to Mumbai's upcoming CCTV network that will be monitored by the police 24x7. The system, say senior cops, will virtually eliminate the bureaucratic `panchnama' process as there will be video evidence for most crimes.
The state government on Saturday formally inked a deal with L&T, which was shortlisted as a developer for the ambitious project after a long tendering process. In the next 90 weeks, Mumbaikars can expect 6,000 electronic eyes to capture each movement in the city .
The CCTVs will be able to zoom in to capture faces of history-sheeters as well as read licence plates of moving cars so that their drivers can be identified and fined for traffic offences. A senior police official said the facial recognition software will speed up investigations as matching photographs of criminals and their identification would become easier.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was present at the signing of the agreement with L&T, said the agency would complete the south Mumbai phase by November 14, 2015, the phase for north and east Mumbai would be completed by April 16, 2016, while central and west Mumbai will get CCTVs by September 17, 2016. The project includes penalties for missed deadlines and no compensation for cost overruns.
According to a senior police official, police will synchronize the computerized data of criminals with the system.
