Petrol & diesel prices hiked

Good days may be over for fuel consumers. Or so it would seem as state-run fuel retailers have raised petrol and diesel prices, reversing a six-month spell of reductions in pump rates as crude headed north in global markets.
From Monday , petrol would cost 82 paise a litre more and diesel by 61 paise at pumps. This would be the first increase since August 2014, reversing a trend marked by 10 reductions in petrol prices and six for diesel.
Petrol in Mumbai will now cost Rs.64.81, up from Rs.63.90 by Rs.0.91. Diesel will cost 53.67, up by Rs.0.68 from Rs.52.99. A litre of petrol in Delhi will cost Rs.57.31 from Monday as against Rs.56.49 currently while diesel will cost Rs.46.62 per litre as against Rs.46.01 at present, oil companies announced here on Sunday .
The past reductions cumulatively brought down petrol price by Rs.17.11 per litre and diesel by Rs.12.96 a litre. The reductions would have been higher but for the government raising excise duty four times since November, in effect taking away a benefit of Rs.7.75 a litre on petrol and Rs.7.50 on diesel that could have otherwise gone to consumers.
Prices of petrol and diesel were last reduced on February 4 by Rs.2.42 per litre and Rs.2.25 per litre, respectively.
