Mid-sea Memorial update

The Maharashtra government has decided to invite proposals from around the world for the design of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji and memorial site planned on an islet in the Arabian Sea.
Those keen on preparing designs for the memorial will be invited to submit their creations on a website to be launched shortly. The site will have extensive information on the life of the Maratha warrior.
The government plans to have a museum showcasing Shivaji’s life, to inspire people who visit the place. The website will be open to receive proposals for about two months.
The state plans to build a statue 309 ft tall that will be taller than the Statue of Liberty, on a 16-hectare islet about a kilometre and a half off the Raj Bhavan. It wants the statue to be even stronger, with a life of about 1,000 years. Towards this objective it has commissioned various studies. While the pre-monsoon survey has been done, it is awaiting the post-monsoon report. The environment impact assessment will be undertaken after the design is prepared.
The government plans to build a helipad at the memorial site and is also examining the possibility of a road from the Raj Bhavan area to the memorial.
