The BJP accused the UPA government of committing a “diplomatic blunder” by allowing Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s advisor Sartaj Aziz to meet Kashmiri separatist leaders here.
Aziz, who is foreign affairs advisor to the Pakistani PM, met separatist leader Yasin Malik and Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq on Sunday along with Pakistani high commissioner to India Salman Bashir.
Reacting to the meeting, BJP president Rajnath Singh questioned the UPA government’s decision to allow Kashmiri separatist leaders to meet Pakistani diplomats.
“After making a failed attempt to buy peace with Pakistan in New York, the UPA government has now allowed Sartaj Aziz to hold talks with Kashmiri separatist leaders in New Delhi,” Singh said.
Accusing the UPA leadership of being ‘submissive’, the BJP president said the government’s Pakistan policy was driven by ad-hocism.
“Why is Aziz given this opportunity when Pakistan is committing acts of aggression in J&K?” Singh asked and added that this was something blatantly against the established international diplomatic norms.
“By allowing Aziz to hold talks with separatists, the government has committed another diplomatic blunder with serious costs to national security and national interest,” he said.
Singh demanded that Aziz be stopped from holding further talks with Kashmiri separatists, and said Kashmir issue was India's internal matter and it should be resolved through a homegrown solution.
The BJP leader said Pakistan has been trying hard to internationalize the Kashmir issue for many years and it once again raised the matter at the UN General Assembly this year. The BJP chief said while India has been facing a series of ceasefire violations from Pakistan, the government's response towards such acts of aggression has been ‘submissive.
