DGCA relaxes norms

Air travellers in India will now be able to use their mobile phones and other personal electronic devices (PEDs) in the non-transmitting or airplane mode during all durations of a flight.
The aviation regulator lifted the ban on use of mobiles and PEDs in airplane mode while flying.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) move now brings Indian flyers at par with their counterparts in Europe and the US where airlines have been allowed from late last year to let passengers use PEDs, including smartphones in airplane mode, in all durations of a flight except for the rare occasions when the captain specifically asks for them to be switched off due to technical reasons.
The US and European Union changed their rule after laying to rest old fears that radio signals from PEDs can interfere with an aircraft’s communications, navigation and other electronic systems when studies showed modern aircraft were capable of tolerating these emissions.
