Mumbai Metro One

The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro is ready to roll out next month—the city’s next mega project after the Sahar Elevated Corridor, monorail and Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road were thrown open this year.
The opening of the route is expected to bring down pressure on the suburban railway system, besides reducing vehicular congestion on eastwest corridors.
Mumbai Metro has missed deadlines but RInfra promoted Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd (MMOPL) has claimed that its execution record is better than all other projects implemented in the city.
The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CRS) has already begun carrying out an inspection of the VAG corridor.
While the 6.5 km SCLR took 11 years to be completed, the 12 km Jogeshwari Vikhrli Link Road (JVLR) was executed in 2012 after the work began in 2003. The 8.8 km (Chembur-Wadala) monorail had overshot 7 deadlines after the contract was allotted in 2008. It finally opened in February 2014 even though the original deadline was December 2010.
Work for the Mumbai Metro project began in 2007 and it is expected to be opened in May as against the original deadline of 2012.
Defending the record, an MMOPL official said, “Mumbai Metro One is built in one of the most constrained corridors of the country. As per the concession agreement, it should have been completed in five years; MMOPL took seven years. The delay had many reasons; but largely it was right of way and clearance issues.”
