Shivaji Memorial update

The Union environment ministry has granted environmental clearance to the much touted Rs.900 crore Chhatrapati Shivaji memorial to be built on a 17-hectare sea-rock off the Marine Drive coast. However, the earlier planned bhoomipujan for the memorial at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi may not happen on February 19, birth anniversary of the Maratha warrior, as some more clearances are awaited.
“Thank you Prakash Javdekarji for giving environment clearance today for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial in Arabian Sea,“ chief minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted, confirming the development.
Mantralaya officials said, “MoEF wants the government to follow the guidelines properly after conducting a thorough environment impact assessment (EIA). Clearance has been given to the memorial and jetties around to ferry passengers,“ environment ministry sources said. They said now that the amendment of reclamation for the memorial has been cleared, the same clearance for the coastal road between Cuffe Parade and Borivli was a mere formality .
