CM okays Dharavi Revamp Development Plan

The Maharashtra state government has given an in-principle approval to the development plan of the ambitious Rs.5,600-crore Dharavi revamp project.
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has approved the sanction plan after incorporating several of the nearly 755 suggestions and objections received since it was put in the public domain. The approved plan will now be forwarded to the slum rehabilitation authority and the state urban development department for final approval. Officials hope to invite project bids for some sectors by October.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Authority (DRPA) had prepared a sanction plan by detailing sectors, roads and other amenities planned and reserved. All future development in the project will have to conform to the sanction plan. Some of the suggestions included in the review are land for a football ground, a state-of-the-art technology institute and a fashion school on the lines of National Institute of Fashion Technology. “Suggestions given by public agencies like BMC and Mhada and by NGOs were given preferences,” said a DRPA official.
The BMC had suggested sector grids and roads be widened in some places and the
state higher and technical education department had sought shifting of reservation for technology institute to a different sector. “These and the demand to rehabilitate affected persons nearby was taken into account,” said an official.
