Somewhere in Jaisalmer....

Agitated over the transfer of superintendent of police Pankaj Choudhary just 48 hours of reopening the history sheet of Congress MLA Saleh Mohammad’s father Gazi Fakir, the people of Jaisalmer observed a bandh. Choudhary became the SP only five months ago.
In fact, this was the second time that the town saw a bandh opposing his transfer.
The state government on Friday had transferred 49 IPS officers including Jaisalmer SP Pankaj Choudhary. The Jaisalmer tourist association, vyapar mandal, taxi association, grain market, guides association and other bodies together observed the Jaisalmer bandh on Sunday.
Local residents took out a procession from Garisar Chowraha to Hanuman Chowraha and shouted slogans against the state government, demanding the SP’s reinstatement. On the other hand, chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday said the transfers were a ‘routine exercise’ as per service rules.
MLA Chotu Singh Bhati, tourist association’s Prithviraj Singh, Rotary Club president Mayank Bhatia and others demanded that the SP be reinstated. They said that in the past four months, over 50 lapkas (tribes who harass tourists) were caught and over 100 vehicles seized. Besides over 700 drunkards were caught. The SP had also formed a special team to ensure that liquor shops are closed in the night.
MLA Chotu Singh said that being the border district, police kept a sharp vigil on smugglers and antinational elements due to which there was resentment among such elements and now with opening of history sheet of Gazi Fakir, the SP was transferred.
Meanwhile, SP Pankaj Choudhary said that he has nothing to do with the Jaisalmer bandh called over his transfer. As far as the opening history sheet of Gazi Fakir, an order came from the state government on July 13 that the history sheet of those who continue with such activities shall be opened, following which such cases have been reopened, he said.
