Subramanian Swamy merges party with BJP

The Janata Party led by Subramanian Swamy on Sunday merged with the BJP, ahead of the 2014 polls.
BJP chief Rajnath Singh announced the merger. “I welcome Subramanian Swamy to the BJP,” Singh told reporters.
Swamy said he was happy to join the BJP. “I am glad. I have been in the Jan Sangh. I hope to work with my colleagues,” he said.
He said the country was passing through “very difficult times” and “this is the time for unity, for (a) nationalist purpose. I hope to work together...to see that a new future for India can be built in the coming months.”
Swamy took over as Janata Party president in 1990. He has had run-ins with the UPA on several occasions especially on issues related to corruption.
Swamy has served as a member of the Planning Commission and a former Cabinet minister at the Centre and has been a five-time MP.
Last month, he appealed to the BJP leadership to declare Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate to “maximize gains” in the 2014 general elections.
