TN reservoirs fill up

It may not be raining much in Tamil Nadu, but reservoirs across the state are brimming like never before. While Stanley reservoir in Mettur, the lifeline of delta farmers, reached its full capacity on Sunday, two others — Sholayar and Aliyar — touched their maximum storage limit on Tuesday. With heavy inflow continuing, thanks to rain in Kerala and Karnataka, Mullaperiyar (located in Kerala), Papanasam and Perunchani dams are expected to brim over in the next few days.
The water level in Mettur, which had been a cause of worry only two weeks ago, touched 121feet on Sunday. The last time it touched the maximum level was in 2005. On Tuesday morning, the reservoir was receiving an inflow of about 1.25 lakh cusecs (cubic feet per second).
If water from Karnataka reservoirs is adding to the Mettur storage, in the state’s western belt, reservoirs are fast filling up due to the rains lashing Kerala. Almost all the reservoirs located close to or in the Western Ghats, including Mullaperiyar, Vaigai, Sholayar and Aliyar, are recording a good inflow. There is a steady rise in water storage in Manimuthar dam, built across aributary of Tamirabarani, in Tirunelveli.
“It was not the case a month ago, with bone dry reservoirs and dried-up channels posing a big threat to the state’s water supply schemes,” said a senior government official.
Not just reservoirs, even temple tanks across the state, most of which were dry a couple of weeks back, have been replenished. On Tuesday, water was released into the Puthiya Kattalai Mettu Vaikal, one of the channels that take water from Mettur to the delta region.
