After Singapore Airlines, Emirates, the world’s largest operator of the double-deck A380 aircraft will deploy the superjumbo on its Dubai-Mumbai route from July.
The airline, which currently operates a fleet of 47 A380s, has not yet announced the date for its commencement of A380 flights into the city. Said an airline spokesperson: “Emirates plans to deploy an A380 on one of its existing daily services between Dubai and Mumbai, starting from July and is working with Mumbai airport authorities to make this deployment possible.”
Last month, Singapore Airlines announced the launch of its A380 services to Mumbai and Delhi from May 30. With these flights, Mumbai will join airports like Los Angeles, Hong Kong, New York JFK, Tokyo Narita and Shanghai Pudong, all of which handle A380 flights by foreign carriers alone as none of these countries’ own airlines operate A380s. “As of May 5, there are 128 A380s in service, 37% with Emirates alone. Singapore Airlines is the next largest operator with 19 and a further five on order,” said a Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation report. Emirates has placed an order for a total of 140 A380s.
