Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway snippets

The Rs 38.4-billion Bengaluru-Chennai expressway got a push from road transport, highways and shipping minster Nitin Gadkari. He said the Centre will go ahead with the project that has been modelled on the lines of the famed Mumbai-Pune expressway . “...But the land needed to be acquired is huge. We do not want farmers to lose out any bit because of poor compensation. Our land acquisition bill will take care of farmers' interests. The economic viability of the project is being studied,“ the minister said.
Gadkari was speaking after laying the foundation for the upgradation of NH-218 (Vijayapura-Kalaburagi-Humnabad Road, now known as NH-50) and NH-234 (Madhugiri-Chikkaballapur-Chintamani-Mulbagal Road, now NH-69).
The 240-km six-lane expressway will be a concrete road with access control. The expressway will allow vehicles to ply at 120 kmph. It is a part of the Indian National Expressway Network envisioned by the BJP government at the Centre.
To be built between Hoskote and Sriperumbudur, the expressway will be an alternative to the two existing national highways widely used to travel between Bengaluru and Chennai: NH-7, passing through Krishnagiri and Vellore, and NH-4 via Kolar and Chittor in Andhra Pradesh.
The expressway will see massive development since it is also proposed to be an industrial corridor. This will link the Bengaluru-Mumbai industrial corridor, which is also in the pipeline.
