MADC invites fresh Global bids for Nagpur's Mihan Runway

Even as chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting to review progress of the Mihan work on July 10, the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has invited fresh global bids for consultants for the second runway at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. The second runway is crucial for the proposed Mihan project as it will cater to the needs of the prestigious Boeing MRO unit as well as the Indian Air Force IL-76 transport aircraft base when it shifts to the alternative site on the Shivangaon side. A couple of months ago, MADC had invited bids for consultants to help with planning, designing and construction of the second runway that will be parallel to the existing one. The 4000x60 metres new runway is estimated to cost over Rs 200 crore. They received only one bid and that too was perceived to be on the higher side as the bidder quoted Rs 3.05 crore as charges.Confirming that the bid was rejected he said fresh process was started to look out for the consultants in the hope of getting a better response. The bid documents will be available from July 6 for a month and a pre-bid meeting is scheduled in Mumbai on July 31.The chief minister who is chairman of MADC will be visiting the Mihan site and inspect the progress of the ongoing work.
Nearly 60 per cent work on switchover bridge of Mihan is completed while that of roads and communications network laying is nearing completion. Deshmukh is likely to sort out the hurdles in way of land acquisition process and also look into rehabilitation and resettlement plans for the project affected people.
