The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) held an akhandpaath to honour the killers of former Army chief Gen A S Vaidya who led the Operation Bluestar at the Golden Temple. The kin of Gen Vaidya’s killers were also “honoured”.
A three-day “paath” concluded on Tuesday, the 20th anniversary of the execution of the two killers — Harjinder Singh ‘Jinda’ and Sukhdev Singh ‘Sukha.’ Gen Vaidya was killed in Pune on August 10, 1986. Jinda and Sukha were executed on October 9, 1992, at Pune’s Yerawada Jail.
The Congress said honouring the killers would “fan passion”. The party has been criticizing the move to build a memorial for victims of Operation Bluestar in the Golden Temple premises.
In 1999, the Akal Takht had called Sukha and Jinda ‘national martyrs.’ SGPC has also mentioned death anniversary of Sukha and Jinda along with assassins of PM Indira Gandhi in its calendar.
BJP, an ally of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab, has struck a discordant note.
