Chennai's new Airport terminal update

Almost 10 months after Consolidated Construction Consortium Ltd, the company entrusted with the Chennai airport project, handed over the renovated airport to the authorities, the Airports Authority of India has said it will open the airport for passengers by mid-December this year.
Inauguration of the renovated airport had been put off several times over the past few months as there were unresolved issues relating to import of aero bridges and security equipment for baggage X-ray. The delay was because the ministry had raised security issues with ordering the equipment from a Chinese firm.
Another hurdle was that the airport authorities did not want to inaugurate the facility for passengers without commercial establishments and facilities like restaurants and shops.
Now, however, considering that the deadline for completion of facilities is approaching, authorities have initiated the process of setting up commercial establishments inside the airport.
The 1,212-crore project, executed by the AAI, appeared to be approaching completion recently after renovation started in August 2008. The makeover involves construction of a new domestic terminal building, ext ension of the existing Anna international terminal and building a secondary runway across the Adyar River.
