BJP sweeps Gujarat Civic Polls

BJP continued to ride the momentum from the assembly elections held in December and pocketed 60 per cent of the seats in the municipal elections held across the state on Sunday.
The party won 47 of the 76 municipalities that went to the polls. Congress could win only nine. While independents got majority in another nine municipalities, no one emerged as a clear winner in 10 municipalities. Counting in Bhachau has been put on hold following allegations that EVMs were tampered with.
State Election Commission officials said that out of 1,905 seats for which results were declared, BJP won on 1,142 (59.95 per cent) while the Congress won 442 seats (23 per cent). Independents won 290 seats (15.22 per cent). NCP, BSP and SP won 16, 13 and two seats, respectively. Even in Thangadh, where there was a major uprising of Dalits against the BJP after three youths were killed in police firing just before assembly elections, the party won 25 of the 27 seats.
BJP has won all 27 seats in Salaya municipality in Jamnagar district with as many as 24 of its candidates being Muslims. 90 per cent of the coastal town’s population is made of Muslims. This victory is expected to be played up by the party in upcoming assembly polls in other states and the 2014 parliamentary polls.
