Ishrat Jahan encounter

In the first arrest in the alleged Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Gujarat IPS officer G L Singhal for his role in the gunning down of Ishrat (19) and three of her companions on June 15, 2004. Singhal, then ACP crime branch, Ahmedabad, has been charged with murder and conspiracy.
CBI sources said Singhal, an inducted IPS officer, was arrested in Ahmedabad. Searches are going on at his residential and official premises. Sources in New Delhi said they had enough evidence against Singhal who, they charged, was closely involved with the encounter.
The CBI, in its FIR, alleged that Singhal, now SP, state crime records bureau, played an active role in the encounter, which was later found to be fake by the special investigation team constituted by the Gujarat high court. Ishrat and three others — Javed Sheikh, Zeeshan Johar and Amjad Ali Rana — were killed by a team of Ahmedabad city crime branch officers on an empty road stretch between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
After Ishrat’s mother approached the Gujarat high court, it constituted the SIT, which concluded that the encounter was fake. Following the report, the high court handed over the matter to the CBI and is monitoring the investigations.
