Sistema Shyam to shut shop in 10 Circles

CDMA operator Sistema Shyam TeleServices Ltd (SSTL), whose 21 licenses were cancelled by the Supreme Court last February said that it is going to shut down operations in 10 circles, while announcing its intent to participate in spectrum auction for other operating areas.
“Over the last one year, the uncertainties resulting from such cancellation have compelled the Company to conserve it’s resources and initiate the process to inform its customers in 10 circles — Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, North East, Orissa and Punjab — to port out to other telecom operators of their choice,” the company said in a statement.
Already several companies have pulled out of the country in the wake of the 2G scam, while those like Telenor have withdrawn from lucrative circles such as Mumbai, where it had 18 lakh subscribers, citing high spectrum charges.

SSTL’s statement came even as the government announced separate auction for the entire spectrum in the 1800 mega hertz band released due to the cancellation of 122 licences by the Supreme Court.
The company, where the Russian government and conglomerate Sistema hold stake, will participate in auction for 800 MHz band.
