Karbi militants killed a superintendent of police and his personal security officer in a gunfight in Assam's Karbi Anglong district on Thursday evening. SP (Hemren police district) Nityananda Goswami and his PSO Ratul Nunisa were shot dead during a search operation against Karbi rebels at Rongphu Hanse, a remote hilly village 200 km south of Guwahati.
Two underground outfits, the Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger (KPLT) and the United Peoples Liberation Army (UPLA), are active in the area. “Investigation is on to find out which of the two groups was involved,“ DGP Khagen Sarma said on Friday .
Both KPLT, founded in 2011, and UPLA, floated recently , have been fighting for a separate state for Karbis.
On Friday , police found the bullet-riddled bodies of the SP and his PSO buried together near a ditch at Rongphu Hanse that borders Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills. In 2005, Goswami and his family had a narrow escape when militants ambushed their vehicle in Karbi Anglong.
Quoting cops who had accompanied Goswami to Rongphu Hanse, additional DGP A P Raut said, “Goswami fought till the end and his PSO was with him all through. Their bodies bore several bullet marks.“
