Kutch to get a desalination plant

Kutch could well come to house Gujarat's second largest seawater desalination plant. Gujarat government has zeroed in on Bhadreshwar in Kutch district to set up a desalination plant with output capacity of 150 million litres per day (MLD) there. The plant has received an agreement in-principle from the state government, with estimated project costs being around Rs.1,300 crore.
“The project will essentially cater to industrial water requirements in the region. However, the water can also be supplied to local people as and when the need arises,“ said Jwalesh Jhaveri, senior manager, Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB), which is the nodal agency for the project. Last month, a leading engineering consultancy company had submitted the project feasibility report to the government.
The desalination plant is a part of Gujarat's State Water Security Project and it will be developed on public-private partnership (PPP) model. The government is now planning to invite bids from private players to jointly develop the project. Local industries in Kutch are expected to greatly benefit from the project.
The Kutch plant is expected to be built over the next 3-4 years and then be ready for use.
The desalination plant in Bhadreshwar would be the second largest such facility in Gujarat. Reliance Industries Ltd already operates a 160.5 MLD (165,500 cubic meter per day) desalination plant at Jamanagar refinery for captive consumption. Other private companies such as Adani group and Essar group, too, have desalination plants. Apart from Kutch, the state government also launched feasibility studies of Maliya in Kutch and Navada in Dholera for desalination plants with a possible capacity of 100-200 MLD.
Not just Gujarat, the Kutch seawater desalination plant will also be among the largest in India. . Currently, two desalination plants having capacity of 100 MLD each are operational at Minjur and Nemmeli near Chennai. The Tamil Nadu government, last year, also approved another plant with 150 MLD at Nemmeli.
Gujarat government is planning to come out with a new policy to promote desalination plants on the sea coast of the state, especially in the Saurashtra and Kutch region, where availability of water is a major issue.
