A developing severe cyclonic storm, Ashobaa, over the Arabian Sea has spelled trouble for a dicey monsoon this year. The storm has not only disrupted the advance of the monsoon over India, but may also result in more rainfall deficiency in June than was earlier forecast.
The monsoon advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, Goa, parts of south Konkan, coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka on June 8. There was no advance on June 9. On June 10, the monsoon advanced into the remaining parts of south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, southwest Bay of Bengal, north interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema.
On June 10, Ashobaa moved westwards and was centered over northwest and adjoining west central Arabian sea, 270 km southeast of Sur in Oman.
IMD officials said Ashobaa would continue to move westwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and cross the Oman coast on June 11.
