Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials to revise the detailed project report of the four upcoming Metro corridors in Mumbai, said U P S Madan, metropolitan commissioner.
Fadnavis met DMRC officials to take stock of the Andheri (E)-Dahisar (E), Andheri (W)-Dahisar (W), Bandra-Mankhurd and Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane Metro corridors.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has also decided to carry out work on Metro-II and Metro-IV (Charkop-Dahisar-BandraMankhurd) corridors in three phases. This means, work will first begin on the Andheri (W)-Dahisar (W) stretch and then the Bandra-Mankhurd stretch. For now, the Andheri (W)-Bandra (W) stretch has been kept on hold. Also, these will be elevated corridors instead of underground. The decision to build elevated Metro-II and Metro-IV corridors was taken after it was found that these were faster and easier to construct compared to an underground one. Also, while building an elevated Metro corridor, traffic movement would not be as severely affected as when constructing an underground one.
MMRDA hopes that the DPR upgrades are done soon so that the work can begin in the next 12 months. The agency plans to have a total 130-km of Metro corridor by 2020, including 33.5-km-long Metro-III (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) underground network.
The Metro-III corridor is facing hurdles due to opposition from citizen groups against the car depot in Aarey Colony and rehabilitation of project-affected people in the Kalbadevi-Girgaum belt. A panel set up to find alternative locations for the depot is expected to submit its report in a week.
