Three elephants were killed and one was injured after a speeding train hit them at Moraghat near West Bengal’s Banerhat railway station on Thursday.
This is the ninth such accident along the 168-km track between New Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar junction this year.
The driver could not stop the train despite applying the brakes due to high speed. “The train kept moving on the tracks and knocked off the four jumbos, one after another. The bodies of two adult pachyderms were flung off some 200-250 m away from the tracks, while the bodies of the calf and its mother remained on the tracks,” a source said.
