Gujarat's Comprehensive Agriculture Policy 2016

The Gujarat government has prepared a new `Comprehensive Agriculture Policy 2016' to overhaul the state agriculture sector. The policy is under finalization and likely to be announced soon. According to the state government's records, 63% of the rural population depends on agriculture and over 50% of the working force is employed in the agriculture sector. The policy aims at doubling farmer's income in five years.
According to the policy draft prepared by the state agriculture department, the government has identified several issues which affect the agriculture sector adversely.
The main problems to be addressed by the government are -low investment in the agriculture and agri-processing sector, lands becoming non-productive in the absence of irrigation facilities, lack of agriculture extension activities in interior and mountainous areas, meagre incentive for allied activities as horticulture and animal husbandry, lack of information about weather conditions, inadequate market support to farmers for selling their yields, lack of facilities for the value addition in the agriculture products, lack of modern APMC and storage facilities and inadequate mechanism for export of agri-products.
