MMRDA-like body for Maha cities on cards

The Maharashtra cabinet approved a draft ordinance for a new Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority on the lines of Mumbai's planning agency .
The proposed state agency will aim for a comprehensive development of other cities in Maharashtra. It will work as a planning, executing and coordinating authority for urban centres other than Mumbai.
The new authority will supervise and coordinate between various civic bodies and implement and finance infrastructure projects like bridges and flyovers. The new MMRDA-type body shall have the powers to review any any proposed project or development scheme. It shall also prepare schemes and advice the civic corporations concerned in formulating and undertaking schemes for development of agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, forestry, dairy development, poultry farming, cattle-breeding, fisheries and other similar activities. The authority will plan for providing alternative accommodation and provide flats for project-affected people. A bureaucrat said that the legislation to establish the MMRDA-type body was already approved, but it could not be tabled in the last budget session. The ordinance will be tabled in the coming session. The legislation was needed to give a Constitutional status to the Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority .
