‘Dividing bigger states will spur development’

Noted economist and chancellor of Hyderabad Central University (HCU) Ch Hanumantha Rao said that administrative degeneration in India was the reason for the rise of separate state movements across the country including Telangana.
Rao, who was former member of Planning Commission, released a book, “Separate State of Telangana”, written by former MLC B Kamalakar Rao. “The creation of Telangana state will give a new lease of life to similar demands for separate states in India,” he said. “In the present organization of states, the regions with political clout and pelf administer the other regions in such a manner that the disadvantaged sections suffer,” he said adding that this is an important lesson not only for Telangana, but for the country as a whole. The areas where separate state demands were being raised include Vidharbha in Maharashtra, Bundelkhand and other regions in Uttar Pradesh and these are expected to get impetus due to the creation of Telangana state, he said.
Hanumantha Rao was of the opinion that dividing bigger states into smaller units would spur the development in both the successor states.
