Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for India’s largest 2,800 MW nuclear power plant at Gorakhpur village in Haryana’s Fatehabad district. Addressing a gathering, Singh said India was among the few countries in the world which had developed the technology to generate nuclear power. Currently, India has a capacity to produce 48,00 MW nuclear power and had set a target of 27,000 MW in the next 10 years.
Construction of the Rs.23,502-crore project, with four 700 MW units, will be taken up in two stages. The first two units would be ready by 2020-21 and the remaining two four years later. The main plant will be set up in 608.5-hectare land, including exclusion zone of one km around the reactor building.
The PM promised that latest technology would be adopted in setting up nuclear power plants so as to ensure that no adverse impact is caused to people living in surrounding areas.
