Social activist and renowned classical dancer Mallika Sarabhai joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) along with 20 of her supporters. Sarabhai and her supporters went to the AAP office in Vasna and completed the joining formalities.
Sarabhai had crossed swords with the Narendra Modi government over the 2002 Gujarat riots in the past and had even contested against BJP stalwart L K Advani from Gandhinagar in 2009.
“I’ve been fighting against corruption for years,” she said at the AAP office. “Even in the last Lok Sabha elections in 2009, I contested as an independent candidate because my values didn’t match with any of the parties. I’ve been fighting against social exploitation for many years. AAP’s values are similar to the ones I have. I didn’t have any talks with the AAP leader and have joined as a foot soldier.”
Sarabhai added: “In Gujarat, there is a voice of only one person, the chief minister. There’re many issues in the state, from corruption to exploitation. AAP will raise these issues and emerge as a strong political alternative.”
